For an individual, to communicate his or her thoughts or reach a large number of audiences with a message, no other media can match the power of the social media network Twitter. In a short form of 140 characters, the thoughts or messages can reach friends, well wishers and co thinkers in just few moments. The Arab spring movement or Wall street's occupy movement of last year would not have been possible without the power of Twitter. Even in India, the Anna Hajare's anti corruption movement of last year was a grand success only because power of social networking media. I witnessed the power of Twitter last year when more than 50000 people collected for a peaceful candle march without any kind of written communication or announcements.
Availability of such powerful media to ordinary man or woman of any country was bound to raise hackles for many a rulers of the countries of the world. In China, which happens to be world's largest one-party state, giving this kind of dangerous weapon in the hands of common men would have been in milder terms a self goal. Chinese Government had no option but to ban the Twitter completely. Indian Government is trying to copy Chinese actions though mainly by back door attempts. When these failed miserably, an attempt is being now made, through courts of law. Google publishes every year, what it calls as Transparency report. Such Transparency report on India, clearly states that number of requests it received for removal of specific content, from the executive in India far outweighed the requests received from the courts of law.
